A small community of friends and family changing the lives of one family…

Wanted to share how we are about to change one little families Christmas:

Tuesday, December 18, 2012

Ok friends and family….I have a favor… For those who can help. One of my families is actually not celebrating Christmas this year. When I asked the very very young mom ” what does your five-year old want for Christmas?” She looked at me with such sadness in her eyes and said “I don’t know. It will just be Tuesday here for us”. They are a very poor family. And this young mom advocates so well …for her very disabled child. I see this child for therapy. They do not have a tree up or any decorations. The daddy works very hard. But times are more than though for them. I’m dropping off donations of gifts and maybe some food as well in Sunday. All I can think about is the five-year old. What would he think Christmas morning. How would he understand that Santa forgot him. He just breaks my heart. And to really see it first hand. And to feel this young moms disappointment just got to me. They have a 5yr old son who is perfectly able and healthy and a 12month old child who has developmental delays, blind and a seizure disorder.
The 5 year old brother does not have developmental concerns. That’s why I was so saddened. How would this five year old understand that Santa forgot him? Heartbreaking Anyone wishing to help. Please let me know.

From Rachel Cantone’s wall: I copied this from a friend in Miller Place, who is a speech therapist and this is what she wrote about one of the families she sees. If anyone would like to donate something, I can pick up or you can drop off!

This is going to be one of the most overwhelming Christmas’s ever. The gifts we will be giving to the family are already incredible. I am writing everything down so that I can post exactly what we give. All of the money I get will be used to buy gift cards for their local supermarket maybe the gas station. Cvs. And places that I know they will need to shop at. You know most of the children I see who fit into his category medically have nursing care. his mom has been trying and fighting for her son. But has not been successful. She manages all of his care on his own. Being a mama is tuff. I can’t imagine having his medical concerns added on-top of that. And she never complains. Just loves him

Thank you Alison for making a donation and paying it forward!! — with Alison Hirst.

And to my sis in law Jaime for buying mom a gift card

About Kim

My name is Kim Marino and I have been practicing as a licensed speech and language pathologist since 1993. I work on Long Island providing diagnostic evaluations and services to children from birth to age 21. My experience is vast and am proud to say that I work with children that may present with articulation and phonological concerns, oral motor feeding concerns, Down Syndrome feeding, cognitive rehabilitation, auditory processing delays, receptive language delays, cleft palate feeding and sound development and expressive language delays. Most importantly, I am the mother of four amazing children and am happily married to my childhood sweetheart. I feel blessed to have my four children and so lucky to share this journey in life with my husband. I always had it somewhere in my head that I wanted to develop a blog or a website of some sort so that I could provide families with an additional resource....so that parents could help their little ones become a better communicator. And as I was developing this blog....I realized that I also needed to share the stories about my life and my children....and the funny things along the way that help to keep me smiling. Whether you are a working mother or not...finding balance between home, children and life can be a challenge....I hope that my blog helps to bring a smile to your face..and also some tools to help you help your little or big one. I hope you enjoy! Kim
