Play 2 Learn winner…..read more below

Very exciting to now have a connection with a family living in Pennsylvania.  The mama below is the winner of the contest I ran last week.  Remember the winner of the contest receives a free speech and language consultation with me.  If she lived close enough we would have met up at the local library…however, given she lives in PA I have offered her a phone consultation.  Please read below the communication we have had already via email.  The winner (SN-to remain anonymous)….has allowed me to post our correspondance…and I will post regarding our consulation…and how we will move forward so that I can help her help her little one.  I plan to run another contest in October.

Best,

Kim

Hi Ms Kim Marino.
We live in Pennsylvania, near Philadelphia. So it would be a phone consultation. So if you could let me know your convenient time, we will make arrangement accordingly.  We have 2 kids 7 and 5 , my son is 5 , who has speech delay. I have found your blog a good resource for parents. Looking forward to speak with you.
Thanks
SN

Sep 28th is fine . Me and my husband will be working that day, if you can give us one of the last appointment  of that day we will do the conference call with you. I am very excited about this. Do you want to review the report of developmental pediatrician consultation? If you have few minutes for review, I  can scan and email it to you. If you are very busy I can tell you the salient features of that assessment at the time of consultation.
Thanks again, may god bless you for your efforts to help kids with special needs!

From ME:

Hi SN.  I quickly read through report.   Tell me this.  Has he had a full speech evaluation?  If yes do you have scores?   And you have articulation concerns?  Please indicate the sounds in error.  Best, Kim.

 September 12, 2012

Dear Kim.

Wow , you are amazing! You were up reading so late.

Yes he had a full speech evaluation through XXXX county intermediate unit.  I will send you that report if you want to review it.

I don’t have any articulation concerns.  In my  observation , if my son wants to speak,  he can, but most of the time he does not want to. I have seen him saying sentences under stress, which otherwise he wouldn’t say. Sometimes I think he looks like having problem understanding. But if can  he pays attention he can understand most of the things.

Let me tell you I am a physician and have some understandings of developmental disorders, I have also interacted with lot of kids in family.  My son in my opinion has multiple issues.

As you can understand our family is undergoing lot of stress related to this issue. We are very confused and don’ t know where to turn for help.

He will start speech , occupational and some special education in next 1 to 2 weeks. He loves reading and writing and doing very well in a reading program through XXXX

I am very excited to now have a connection with SN…looking forward to helping her…and giving her some strategies and guidance so that she can best help her son!

About Kim

My name is Kim Marino and I have been practicing as a licensed speech and language pathologist since 1993. I work on Long Island providing diagnostic evaluations and services to children from birth to age 21. My experience is vast and am proud to say that I work with children that may present with articulation and phonological concerns, oral motor feeding concerns, Down Syndrome feeding, cognitive rehabilitation, auditory processing delays, receptive language delays, cleft palate feeding and sound development and expressive language delays. Most importantly, I am the mother of four amazing children and am happily married to my childhood sweetheart. I feel blessed to have my four children and so lucky to share this journey in life with my husband. I always had it somewhere in my head that I wanted to develop a blog or a website of some sort so that I could provide families with an additional resource....so that parents could help their little ones become a better communicator. And as I was developing this blog....I realized that I also needed to share the stories about my life and my children....and the funny things along the way that help to keep me smiling. Whether you are a working mother or not...finding balance between home, children and life can be a challenge....I hope that my blog helps to bring a smile to your face..and also some tools to help you help your little or big one. I hope you enjoy! Kim
