Spending quality time with your children

Gregory decided that yesterday…..February 18, 2012……was going to be DATE DAY…..he was home alone with me….my husband at work….and all of his siblings out.  I had so much to do for work…typing reports and trying to finish another class I am taking offered by Lori Overland…..so I thought…this was a perfect opportunity for me to get some work done…maybe Gregory will play with the boys on the block….ride his bike….play outside….and I can finish up the unfinished work I have piled on my desk…..but he asked me:

“Ma (yea he calls me Ma…..and if I had to count how many times in a single minute I hear him calling me Ma…..it probably would be close to 20……and the funny thing is….he calls my name….and then typically does not say anything else…just Ma.  Does he like just saying my name….does he want to know that I am close by…..does he forget what he wanted to say and that is why he just says Ma…..or is he just so routinized in saying my name over and over again….it just becomes part of his spontaneous speech……..so I work on this with him….in a funny, joking and loving way:

“Gregory when you say Ma….remember to follow it by a question or a statement.  For example you might say: Ma I am hungry can I have something to eat…or Ma let’s play a game together.”  Despite working on this quite frequently….he still has not figured out how to say Ma….and then ask me a question or make a statement (an interrogative is question….and a declarative is a statement…..I have not gotten this far to explain these two really good vocabulary words to him….but I will)……

anyway…..yesterday…..Gregory said to me:

“Ma…..since we are all alone….can we have lunch together…..and watch TV….and hold hands on the couch….it can be DATE DAY…..and what is today Ma…..okay so February 18th will always be date day.”

So that’s just what we did…..he wanted Wendy’s…..so we got Wendy’s……I got a large fry and a side of cheese sauce…probably one of my favorite things in the world….well mac and cheese is really top on my list…..find the recipe under What to make for Dinner!….under categories to the right……and Gregory had all of his favorite things from Wendy’s…..we watched a movie…played Scrabble on my Iphone….held hands…..and enjoyed a lazy day together.

I often think that as parents we try so hard at times to make sure that we take our children places….to the movies..to the beach…..the park…..on vacation….keeping them busy…..making sure that they are busy…having fun…..not bored…..riding bikes…out doing stuff….so we do not feel badly that they are just at home……when basically I think all they really want and need is quality time with mom and dad…..and that can be as simple as a lazy day on the couch……and of course I am sure to add some “speech mama” stuff to our lazy day…..when playing scrabble….any new word that he did not know we looked up the definition on my Iphone…..and I had him try to say the new word in a sentence…..we made them silly and funny……

What a great day together…..and look how cute he looks in the picture above…..he is wearing his beads getting ready to go to my sister in law’s house for a Mardi Gras birthday dinner…..and I made Shrimp Po’ Boys….yummy delicious…..I will have to post the recipe….served with remoulade sauce….on toasted baguettes……DEEEEEEEEELICIOUS!

About Kim

My name is Kim Marino and I have been practicing as a licensed speech and language pathologist since 1993. I work on Long Island providing diagnostic evaluations and services to children from birth to age 21. My experience is vast and am proud to say that I work with children that may present with articulation and phonological concerns, oral motor feeding concerns, Down Syndrome feeding, cognitive rehabilitation, auditory processing delays, receptive language delays, cleft palate feeding and sound development and expressive language delays. Most importantly, I am the mother of four amazing children and am happily married to my childhood sweetheart. I feel blessed to have my four children and so lucky to share this journey in life with my husband. I always had it somewhere in my head that I wanted to develop a blog or a website of some sort so that I could provide families with an additional resource....so that parents could help their little ones become a better communicator. And as I was developing this blog....I realized that I also needed to share the stories about my life and my children....and the funny things along the way that help to keep me smiling. Whether you are a working mother or not...finding balance between home, children and life can be a challenge....I hope that my blog helps to bring a smile to your face..and also some tools to help you help your little or big one. I hope you enjoy! Kim
