Harbor View Nursery School

All four of my children attended Harbor View Nursery School in Port Jefferson.  They loved it there….and for me it was a wonderful place to send my children.  Like a home away from home…..and the fact that it is a true co-operative preschool was exactly what I wanted and needed for my children.

Harbor View truly is run by the families of the children that attend the school.  There is an executive staff that volunteers their time….and many other positions held by parents of the children….all volunteering their time.  Another positive about Harbor View….every parent has an opportunity on a monthly basis to participate in the class….this means that you have the chance to really see your child interacting and playing with the other children…sitting at circle time….having snack…participating in show and tell (this was a favorite of mine…the questions the children would ask just made me laugh…so sweet and cute)….and by participating you have the opportunity to see how happy your little one is to have you there at Harbor View.

Harbor View has been around since the 70s….I do not know the exact date that it opened….but I know that my youngest sister Jen…the one who just had the baby…she attended Harbor View…and she is now 33.  Harbor View follows Piaget’s model of learning through play….which is exactly how children should be learning.  The classroom teacher is amazing and wonderful……smart and full of energy and excitment….her children too are of course Harbor View graduates….and the teacher’s assistant is also one of the most amazing mother’s I ever met in my life.  She and I have a connection that will never be broken….despite not seeing each other often or enough….I think she once called me her “best friend that she never had”…..I guess because we have this bond created many years ago…but never really have the chance to spend time together….but we will always be connected.  Her four children too are Harbor View graduates. That’s the kind-of feeling you get at Harbor View….that is what the school has to offer the children attending and the families that are part of their little one’s first journey in school.

I plan to post more about Harbor View….just because it meant so much to me at one point in my life….and now my niece goes there…and so many others whom I love.

Harbor View has an open House on Saturday February 11th from 10-2pm…..if you are looking for a pre-school…please take the time to visit them on February 11th 2012.

Have fun!

About Kim

My name is Kim Marino and I have been practicing as a licensed speech and language pathologist since 1993. I work on Long Island providing diagnostic evaluations and services to children from birth to age 21. My experience is vast and am proud to say that I work with children that may present with articulation and phonological concerns, oral motor feeding concerns, Down Syndrome feeding, cognitive rehabilitation, auditory processing delays, receptive language delays, cleft palate feeding and sound development and expressive language delays. Most importantly, I am the mother of four amazing children and am happily married to my childhood sweetheart. I feel blessed to have my four children and so lucky to share this journey in life with my husband. I always had it somewhere in my head that I wanted to develop a blog or a website of some sort so that I could provide families with an additional resource....so that parents could help their little ones become a better communicator. And as I was developing this blog....I realized that I also needed to share the stories about my life and my children....and the funny things along the way that help to keep me smiling. Whether you are a working mother or not...finding balance between home, children and life can be a challenge....I hope that my blog helps to bring a smile to your face..and also some tools to help you help your little or big one. I hope you enjoy! Kim
